All warm season grasses are suitable in the southeast. The best grass for each situation is determined by a series of questions asked by our expert staff to help a customer get the pest possible grass for their unique situation.
What distinguishes Modern Turf from other sod companies?
Our team of experts, who collectively possess over 125 years of experience in turf grass management. Selecting the appropriate type of sod for your lawn is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Factors such as geographical location, weather conditions, and the specific layout of your lawn—such as the amount of shade versus direct sunlight and the potential for flooding—are all critical considerations in determining the most suitable investment for the optimal growth of your lawn. Our team of experts is dedicated to providing assistance at every stage of this process.
How much does a pallet of sod cost?
In general pallets of sod run from $150 to $300. The pricing is contingent upon the specific variety and the quantity you require. Please contact us for the most up-to-date information regarding our sod pricing.
Do you sell less than a pallet?
Certainly, a half pallet of Centipede and Bermuda grasses is capable of covering an area of 250 square feet, while a half pallet of Zoysia grasses covers approximately 225 square feet. Our Blythewood store occasionally has these items in stock. It is advisable to call in advance to inquire about available options.
How much area does a pallet cover?
A pallet of Centipede and Bermuda grasses typically covers an area of 500 square feet, whereas a pallet of Zoysia grasses covers approximately 450 square feet.
Do you sell to the public?
Absolutely! As a family-owned and operated business, our top priority at Modern Turf is to provide exceptional service to all our customers. We value your support and are continually seeking opportunities to enhance your experience with us.
Do you deliver? Is there a charge for delivery?
Certainly! We offer delivery services to a wide range of locations. Freight costs are generally determined by the distance and the type of delivery required.
What are the dimensions of a full pallet?
Our sod is packaged on a 4′ x 4′ pallet and has an approximate height of 4′.
How much does a full pallet of sod weigh?
Depending on the variety and moisture content, it ranges between 2000 lbs and 3000 lbs.
Can I put a full pallet in the back of my pickup truck?
Most pickup trucks (Ford F-150 and Chevy 1500) are not suited for carrying a full pallet of sod. Their payloads are 1500 lbs, and a full pallet rarely weighs less than 2000 lbs.
Will the sod be delivered in rolls?
We use a host of different harvesters capable of cutting the sod in slabs or mini-rolls. Please ask at the time of order how your sod will be harvested.
How do I need to prepare my area before I lay sod?
Before installation, we recommend applying an herbicide to eliminate weeds at least one week in advance. Following this, you should lightly till and level the area, incorporating a soil amendment like our Blended Earth. When installing the sod, position it similarly to a staggered brick or tile placement, ensuring that the longer side runs parallel to any slope. Finally, water the area according to seasonal requirements.
Should I place a sod order in advance?
Absolutely! We recommend contacting us from a week to a few days prior to your desired delivery date. This will ensure you get the sod when you need it.
Do you have sod available for immediate purchase?
Generally, the response is no. All of our sod is scheduled for cutting to ensure its freshness upon delivery. We cultivate a variety of different types; therefore, advance scheduling is necessary.
When is the best time to lay sod?
Although we offer sod for sale throughout the year, the ideal time for installation in the southeastern United States is early spring. While summer laying is feasible, it requires diligent watering to ensure the sod establishes properly. In winter, watering sod is still necessary, though less frequent than in the warmer months. The key takeaway is to ensure that your new sod never completely dries out.
Can I get the same sod as a golf course?
Absolutely! For a lush, durable lawn that can withstand wear and tear, we recommend our fairway type Bermudagrasses.
Do you provide additional landscaping products?
At our Blythewood location, we offer an extensive range of landscaping materials, including a wide variety of mulch, sand, gravel, stone, and our proprietary mushroom-compost based soil product, Blended Earth.
Do you offer Lawn Care?
Unfortunately, we do not provide lawn care. However, please give us a call, and we would be happy to suggest a preferred provider based on your location.
Can I order sod on-line?
We do not offer online sales, but by completing forms on our website, we can get you taken care of in a jiffy!
How much area will a cubic yard of mulch cover?
One cubic yard of mulch provides coverage for 100 square feet at
a depth of 2 to 3 inches.
Do I need to put anything on the sod before or when I lay it?
This is a great question that deserves a great answer but… Your sod will come well-nourished and does not need immediate fertilization. However, bermudagrasses that use more fertilizer will need a good starter fertilizer applied prior to laying the sod on the bare ground. Zoysia and Centipede use much less fertilizer but will still benefit from some fertilizer for establishment. For these grasses, we recommend using an organic product like Milorganite, as organics typically have much less nitrogen and are less likely to burn or over-fertilize these grasses.
How much do I need to water new sod?
A lot! More than you think. More than your neighbors think. Water it the first time until it is puddling. After that, several times a day (in the spring and summer months) until the grass is secure to a tug. In other words, it needs to have good roots before backing off the frequency.
What type of grass stays green year-round?
In northern states, cool season grasses like tall fescue and bluegrass stay green year-round. In the south, warm season grasses go dormant in the fall, lose their color, and green up in the spring.
