Nematodes are round worms that can only be seen with a microscope. They live on dead organic matter and can do significant damage to your lawn, turf or playing fields. There are a few things you can look for to discern whether or not you have a nematode problem.

Three Signs You Have a Nematode Problem

Here are a few of the signs that you have a nematode problem.

  1. Yellow discoloration
  2. Wilting during the heat of the day (even with adequate moisture)
  3. Thinning

These symptoms can result in physical damage to the turf’s root system and then to a reduction in wear tolerance. Unfortunately, these symptoms can be made worse by other factors such as fungal diseases and low-level lighting. Additionally, nematode infestations are more prevalent in wet climates.

How to Control Nematodes in Your Lawn, Turf or Playing Fields

All nematodes can cause damage, however, root knot nematodes are the most destructive. There are several methods for controlling nematodes such as fumigants if you want to use a chemical treatment, or a biological control, using living organisms like bacteria, fungi, predatory nematodes or other invertebrates.

It’s best to take a proactive approach when it comes to controlling nematodes. That begins by learning the different types of nematodes, what environments they prefer and how to control them before they overtake your turf. Then you should talk with a sod expert who can answer all of your questions and provide you with some valuable insight for keeping your greens in excellent condition.
