WHAT IS BLENDED EARTH?

Blended Earth is a premium mushroom compost-based soil product. The compost itself is a blend of nutrients used by commercial mushroom farms to enhance mushroom growth. Once harvested, it’s composted for several weeks, sterilized*, and then recycled into Blended Earth. We carefully mix in our own special ingredients to make it a complete, ready-to-plant soil.

You can use Blended Earth in your vegetable garden, flower beds, and as a top dressing for new sod. Blended Earth is unique because it provides soil conditioning, proper drainage, and does not have chemical fertilizers. HOW TO USE

BLENDED EARTH
Raised Bed Gardening

This popular gardening technique offers versatility for growing flowers as well as vegetables. There are many ways to build a raised bed. Landscape timbers are probably the most practical and least expensive material but there are a variety of stone products well-suited for this purpose, and ready-to-build raised bed kits, most of which you can find at your favorite local garden center or big-box store. Devise a plan and layout that suits your needs but we do recommend building your raised bed to a depth of at least 6” to 8”.

If you have weeds or other vegetation where you plan to build your bed, remove them first. Either dig them out, or use an herbicide to eradicate the vegetation. Put a thin layer of newspaper in the bed and wet it down to keep it in place then fill the bed with Blended Earth to a depth of at least 6” to 8” for maximum results. Now you are ready to plant flowers or vegetables.

Do not add other amendments, including fertilizer, since this is a “ready-to-plant” soil. The only thing necessary this growing season is to water your plants on a regular basis. For the next growing season, apply a thin layer of Blended Earth on top of your bed and till it into the existing soil. This will replenish the nutrients and loosen any compaction that might have occurred. Over time you may notice normal settling of the Blended Earth, as any soil will tend to do. By adding Blended Earth every growing season up to the original 6” to 8” depth additional fertilizers should not be necessary.

Repair and Caring for your Lawn

Many of us have experienced weak turf and bare spots from time to time and believed the solution was to spread sand on it. Practically the only advantage of applying sand is leveling uneven areas. You probably noticed your grass starting to run over the sand and thought you had solved your problem. Unfortunately, when the runners start to root there’s nothing in the sand to provide nutrition, so your problem is still there. It is not wise to plant tomatoes or flowers in sand and turf is no exception. Grass needs nutrition to be healthy, just as any other kind of plant.

Use Blended Earth for more successful repair of lawn bare spots. Remove any dead grass and debris from the bare spots and loosen soil. Fill this area with Blended Earth and level it. If the bare area is larger than a dinner plate, buy a few squares of sod and cut strips or plugs, placing them strategically to cover the bare soil. The more bare area you cover the sooner the damaged areas will fill in. The patched sod can run in all directions providing a much quicker repair.

Blended Earth is also great for top-dressing your entire lawn. Fill a wheelbarrow with Blended Earth and roll it to a corner of your yard. Place a shovel-full in a little mound at your feet. Don’t attempt to broadcast it with your shovel. Uniform coverage is essential and throwing it would limit uniformity. After you’ve placed the first mound at your feet, put another shovel-full close to it. The goal is to distribute mounds over the entire yard. Using a flexible leaf rake, gently brush the mounds into the turf as evenly as possible. You should see remarkable results after top-dressing with Blended Earth and will not need additional chemical fertilizers.

Installing Trees and Shrubs

Use Blended Earth when planting trees and shrubs. Dig a hole considerably wider and slightly deeper than the root ball of the plant you’re installing. Do not replace any of this soil back into the hole. Instead, fill the bottom of the hole with Blended Earth, adjusting the depth to ensure the top of the root ball will sit 1” to 2” above the level of surrounding soil. Backfill the remainder of the hole with Blended Earth and you should not need any other amendments or fertilizer. Finally, apply a 2” to 3” layer of mulch over the newly-planted area.

Potting Soil for Containers

Blended Earth is a premium potting soil, with no large sticks, twigs, or bark sometimes found in other potting mixes. Blended Earth has the nutrition your container plants need, without the addition of extra fertilizer, and its soil conditioner helps retain moisture and provide drainage. Use Blended Earth for all your container-gardening projects, whether small or large.

New Sod Installation

Blended Earth makes an excellent soil amendment when installing new sod. Remove all existing vegetation in the area to be sodded. Either till and rake out, or use an herbicide to eradicate the weeds or brush. If using an herbicide for this purpose follow all manufacturer’s label recommendations and allow several days before installing new sod. Properly grade the area, then evenly distribute Blended Earth over-top, using a rate of ¾ cubic yard to cover 500 square feet. Till the Blended Earth into existing soil, then smooth and level it before laying sod. Blended Earth provides all the nutrition new sod requires without the addition of starter fertilizer.
